SCROLL DOWN FOR ASSEMBLY TIMES - IT'S VERY IMPORTANT YOU ARE REGISTERED AND READY TO GO TO THE START AT YOUR ASSEMBLY TIME

KEY INSTRUCTIONS:

KIT:
FULL FRA KIT IS AN ABSOLUTE AND MANDATORY REQUIREMENT. YOU MUST ALSO CARRY A SPARE INSULATING LONG SLEEVED TOP, in addition to what you are wearing at the start. You must therefore have:
• waterproof top and bottoms;
• hat and gloves;
• compass, whistle and sufficient emergency food for several hours on the hill
• a long sleeved insulating top which is a genuine spare layer.
We will undertake targeted kit checks (possibly on the hill) if necessary and you will be disqualified and subject to WFRA disciplinary action if you do not comply with the kit requirement. End of.
Your map will be issued to you as you start. It is based on the OS 1:25,000 mapping but has been reproduced at (roughly) 1:20,000 (5cm to 1km) to make it a little easier to read. The blue gridlines are 1km apart and north is at the top of the map.

GPS:
The event is held under WFRA rules. You are no longer permitted to use GPS devices (hand helds, watches, etc.) to navigate with. However, I would encourage anyone with any doubt as to their navigation ability to carry a GPS unit or to install the “OS Locate” app on their smartphone in case you get properly lost. OS Locate will give you a grid reference and enable you to identify where you are on the map (which has the gridlines labelled). If you use the GPS you must tell the timer at the finish. You will be listed in the results with a time but you will be deemed non-competitive and not given a finishing position.

WEATHER:
Right now (four days out) the forecast is for cloudy conditions with light to moderate wind from the north west. With wind chill the temperature will feel just below freezing in the valleys and much colder on exposed ridges and hillsides.
Be prepared to be out for several hours in these conditions. If it rains you will chill much more quickly.

PARKING:
Please park responsibly in Church Stretton – you have to pay for parking in some car parks; don’t block people’s drives etc. just to avoid a small parking fee.

REGISTRATION:
Registration opens at 08:45 - do not come early please!
VERY VERY IMPORTANT:
In order to get you off efficiently this year we have given everybody an assembly time. The assembly area will be on the Church Lane side of the Scout Hut (inside!). YOU MUST BE IN THE ASSEMBLY AREA WITH ALL YOUR KIT, READY TO GO, HAVING BEEN TO THE TOILET ETC. AT YOUR ASSEMBLY TIME. We will then take you to the start which is not at the Scout Hut.
YOUR ASSEMBLY TIME IS POSTED ON THE MERCIA WEBSITE – PLEASE CHECK IT NOW. Please allow at least 30 minutes to register and get yourself sorted out.

RACE INFORMATION

The Mercia Hill Trial is a navigation event on the Shropshire Hills. The 2019 event will take the form of two linear orienteering courses (medium and long). As you start, you will be given a map showing the checkpoints. The route you take between them is up to you - navigate via the checkpoints in the correct order to the finish as quickly as you can. The Hill Trial is suitable for fellrunners and fast hillwalkers. As you start, you will be provided with a map showing the checkpoints (“controls”) and the order in which you must navigate between them. The route you take between checkpoints is up to you. There will be two courses:
Short course – planner's route approx. 11.0km/6.8 miles; optimum route approx. 710m/2,330’ of ascent;
Long course – straight line distance approx. 16.4km/10.2 miles; optimum route approx. 1,020m/3,350’ of ascent.

You can compete individually or as a pair. You (or the at least the lead entrant if entering as a pair) must have previous experience of winter fell race at a similar event such as Kinder Trial, Gritstone Tryal, Dark and White Mini Mountain Marathons, or any full Mountain Marathon. If you don’t have the relevant experience, and have no potential partner who does, we may be able to pair you up, please email the event organiser (secretary@merciafellrunners.org.uk) before trying to enter online.

The link to entries will be posted very shortly (not later than January 4th!!!)

The event takes place in January. The 2013 event was successfully completed by all the entrants despite blizzard conditions. Full kit as per the Welsh Fell Running Association’s safety rules will be mandatory and, additionally, the outer layer must comprise waterproof, not just windproof top and bottoms and runners must carry a spare insulting layer (spare = not worn whilst waiting to start).

Registration will be at the Scout Hut in Church Stretton from 08:45. There is a surprise in this year's format, so to help us facilitate the smooth running of the event we are asking that you specify when you would like to start - the more flexibility you show here the more likely we are to be able to accommodate everyone's wishes. Slower runners and walkers should aim to start earlier: the courses close at 3:00pm and competitors must be back by then otherwise they will be presumed lost! A list of start times will be emailed out to competitors and posted on the evening of Friday 18th January.

Important: PLEASE PARK CONSIDERATELY IN THE TOWN. DO NOT BLOCK ENTRANCES AND UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES PARK IN PRIVATE PARKING AREAS WHILST YOU ARE COMPETING IN THE EVENT. There is plenty in town centre car parks or in Cardingmill Valley.
